University of Michigan Students Hold Thanksgiving Food Drive

November 29, 2018

The Wolverines may have lost to Ohio State, but that doesn't mean there wasn't anything to celebrate in Ann Arbor this month.

On November 16, the Medical Education Service Opportunities (MESO) at the University of Michigan held a food drive to help provide Thanksgiving meals for their neighbors in need. MESO is undergraduate student organization that helps pre-health students participate in health-related educational and service events.

As we know, food insecurity can lead to a host of health problems. People who are hungry are 2.9x more likely to be in poor health and are more susceptible to chronic conditions like diabetes. Food insecurity has also been linked to higher rates of obesity among both adults and children.

Students, faculty, and members of the Ann Arbor community were asked to donated Thanskgiving-themed items, such as stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned vegetables/gravy, cranberry sauce, and pie filling, to help set the table for their neighbors in need. Together, they donated 60 lbs. of non-perishables, which is enough to provide 50 holiday meals!

Our friends from Frisbie Moving pitched in by volunteering to deliver all of the donations to Food Gatherers.

Nearly 49,000 people in Washtenaw County are food insecure, including 1 in 9 children. Thank you to MESO, Frisbie Moving, and everyone who made a donation for helping us fight hunger during the holiday season.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
