Fall With A Cause: Reducing Food Waste with Food Drives

November 27, 2024

It’s officially fall time and the holidays are near. What better way to celebrate than helping out your local community with a fall food drive

Hunger exists in every town in the U.S. and every year millions of families struggle to put food on the table during the holidays. Your local food banks and pantries rely on donations to help feed people in your community. Food drives bring nonperishables directly to the shelves of food pantries and out of landfills. From cans of green beans to bags of rice, every single donation counts and helps someone in need.

This fall we’ve teamed up with a number of our multi-family properties for food drives with impact. By encouraging residents to donate their unwanted nonperishable goods, we’re able to turn food waste into meals.

Did you know that in Washington state alone over 800,000 people are facing hunger?

Two women hold food donations in front of moving truck.Based in Seattle, Goodman Real Estate hosted nine food drives in support of Hunger Action Month. Goodman is invested in cultivating positive change and creating meaningful impact through their multi-family communities.

In the month of September they were able to do just that by collecting 3,457 lbs of food donations. This is over 2,800 meals given back to communities throughout Washington.

It doesn’t stop there! In the spirit of giving, a number of our communities are decorating their food donation stations and raising awareness for food insecurity to their residents in a creative way.

By hosting Thanksgiving food drives and encouraging residents to bring in meals for those in need, together, these amazing teams are impacting their local community in a positive way. Shoutout to Equity, Village Green, Student Quarters, AMLI, LivCor, Bell Partners, Mapletree, AVE, National Development, Dermot, and Paradigm for their efforts this fall season!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
