September 2017 Mover of the Month: A-1 First Class Moving & Storage

October 10, 2017

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that A-1 First Class Moving & Storage, an Atlas Van Lines agent, is our Mover of the Month for September 2017!

A-1 First Class Moving & Storage, located in Brooklyn, NY, joined the Move For Hunger network in 2012.

"I really liked the premise," said Laurie Koehler A-1 First Class Moving & Storage's Vice President of Business Administration. "I thought it was brilliant."

During the past five years, A-1 First Class Moving & Storage has held an annual Fill-A-Truck food drive, helped a local charter school hold a food drive of their own, and participated in multiple food rescues. And last month, when hurricanes devastated Texas and Florida, they were ready to step up to the plate.

From September 19-21, A-1 First Class Moving & Storage partnered with the New York Mets to hold a hurricane relief drive at Citi Field. Over the course of three days, nearly 74,000 pounds of food, water, and other supplies were donated. In addition to providing the use of their trucks, members of the A-1 crew were on hand to help load the donations onto the trailers. Most importantly, A-1 First Class Moving & Storage volunteered to personally deliver the goods to Texas and Florida.

And they're not done yet! On Saturday, A-1 First Class Moving & Storage is sending a truck and a crew to rescue any unused food/beverages from the Brooklyn Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon. Next month, they'll be teaming up with the Mets again to deliver 100 Thanksgiving turkeys to locations in each of New York City's five boroughs.

How, you might wonder, is a company able to devote so much of their time and resources to doing charitable work?

"It comes from our culture and leadership team," Koehler said. "We believe strongly in giving back, being involved, and helping out as much as we can."

Koehler said that the company's commitment to their community resonates with the rest of the staff, too. She noted that some employees view A-1 First Class Moving & Storage's philanthropic efforts as an opportunity to teach their children.

"Some of our team will bring their kids to the events so that they can see the importance of community service. It's been very important to my family. We have raised our kids to want to be volunteers. I feel it's an important legacy."

That's an impact you can't possibly measure, but here's one you can: since 2012, A-1 First Class Moving & Storage has delivered nearly 100,000 lbs. of food -- enough to provide more than 82,000 meals.

In addition to the award, A-1 First Class Moving & Storage will also be receiving a Move For Hunger hand truck, courtesy of Victory Packaging, lunch for their entire staff, compliments of Montway Auto Transport, and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to A-1 First Class Moving & Storage on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the Empire State and beyond!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
