Summer Hunger Doesn't Take a Vacation: How You Can Help Feed Children This July

For most of us, summer means running through sprinklers, backyard cookouts, or the simple joy of an ice-cold popsicle on a hot afternoon. Summer is supposed to be a season of play, curiosity, and endless possibility.

But for millions of families across the United States, the end of the school year creates a new challenge: making sure their children have enough to eat.

When schools close for the summer, the breakfasts and lunches many children depend on disappear with them. Those daily, dependable meals that children and families rely on during the academic year are suddenly gone, leaving families to replace dozens of meals every month.

This is the reality of summer hunger. But this July, we are teaming up with some incredible partners to do something about it…and every dollar you donate will be matched.

Your Donation, Doubled: The Nourish the American Dream Campaign

From July 1 through July 7, 2026, Move For Hunger is proud to join the Albertsons Companies Foundation for its Nourish the American Dream initiative, powered by their Nourishing Neighbors program.

What makes this week so powerful? Albertsons Companies Foundation will match every dollar donated to Move For Hunger during this campaign, 50/50. That means your $25 donation becomes $50. Your $100 becomes $200. Every contribution you make goes twice as far toward feeding children this summer.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
