Xander Bossone Hosts 7th Annual Birthday Food Drive

December 16, 2016

xanderbossone_fat2016_lowys-9When Manasquan resident, Xander Bossone turned 11, he told his mother that, rather than have a party, he wanted to invite his friends to help him host a food drive for the community. Ever since, with the help of Move For Hunger and Lowy’s Moving Service, a Wheaton agent, he has continued to host an annual birthday food drive. Xander turned 17 this year, and to celebrate he hosted his 7th annual food drive at the ACME in Manasquan on December 11.

Xander challenged his neighbors to help him “fill-a-truck” with food for The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Countiesxanderbossone_fat2016_lowys-16The food drive was a major success, as Xander collected more than 2,000 pounds of food - That's enough to provide nearly 1,700 meals! His all-time total now stands at nearly 27,000 pounds of food since 2012 -- that means that he has helped provide more than 22,000 meals for his neighbors in need.

There are nearly 120,000 people facing hunger in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, including 1 in 6 children. Thank you to Xander and Lowy's Moving Service for your compassion and commitment to helping others.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
