Meet the CAN: Lisa Fontana on Volunteering to Fight Hunger

July 10, 2026

Welcome to Meet the CAN, a new series spotlighting the people behind Move For Hunger’s Corporate Action Network. The Corporate Action Network (CAN) is Move For Hunger's group of moving, relocation, and mobility industry professionals who volunteer their time to fight hunger and reduce food waste. Since 2009, Move For Hunger has transported more than 89.6 million pounds of food to food banks across the U.S. and Canada, thanks in part to dedicated volunteers and CAN members. Each quarter, we’ll introduce you to a CAN member, share what they’re working on, highlight the impact they’re making in their communities, and show you how to get involved.

For our first spotlight, we couldn’t think of a better person to feature than Co-Chair Lisa Fontana, Senior Strategic Account Executive at Rocket Mortgage, and one of Move For Hunger’s most dedicated volunteers.

How Lisa Fontana Connects to Move For Hunger’s Mission

When Lisa first learned about Move For Hunger, one memory came rushing back: a story her mother had told her years ago.

Her mother was the youngest of six children, and the family often struggled to put food on the table. One evening, her grandmother had no idea what they would eat for dinner. Then, a chicken fell off the back of a passing truck and landed in their yard. That chicken became dinner for the whole family that night.

“That story has never left me,” Lisa says. “It reminds me how easy it is to take for granted something as basic as knowing where your next meal is coming from. It’s why the mission of Move For Hunger resonates so deeply with me. Every meal provided represents hope for someone who truly needs it.”

A Lifetime of Volunteering and Fighting Hunger

Giving her time has always been at the heart of who Lisa is. “I’ve always believed that one of the greatest gifts we can give is our time,” she says. “Some of my most meaningful and life-changing experiences have come through volunteering and serving others.”

Those experiences run deep. She served as a one-on-one Special Needs Partner at NorthRidge Church in Plymouth, Michigan, supporting children so their parents could attend church knowing their child was safe and cared for. After Hurricane Katrina, she traveled with her husband and a team from NorthRidge to help families clean out and rebuild their homes alongside Samaritan’s Purse. And through the Rocket Community Fund, she’s joined hundreds of colleagues to renovate two Detroit schools into brighter spaces for students and teachers.

Her Move For Hunger journey started with a Truck Pull in Detroit, followed by another in Cleveland. Since then, she’s organized a Peanut Butter & Jelly food drive in her Pennsylvania neighborhood, volunteered at the Music City Drop in Nashville, taken part in virtual fundraisers, and stepped into her second term as Co-Chair of CAN. “There are just so many ways we can be a part of this organization,” Lisa says.

Lisa Fontana on Fighting Hunger and Food Waste

What are you working on right now that’s helping fight hunger or reduce food waste?

I’m currently helping with the Motor City Drop in Detroit and the Truck Pull in Nashville – two incredible events that raise both food and funds while bringing communities together.

Why does this work matter to you?

Because making a difference doesn’t always require a huge commitment – sometimes it’s simply showing up. If I can spend a few hours having fun while helping feed families, that’s time incredibly well spent.

How can other CAN members get involved?

Volunteer at an event, start a fundraiser, make a donation, or invite your friends, family, coworkers, or clients to participate. Every person who gets involved expands our impact.

What impact are you hoping to make as Co-Chair of CAN?

I hope to inspire more people to get involved, think creatively about fundraising, and ultimately help provide more meals to families facing food insecurity.

What’s one recent win that’s inspired you?

I’m especially excited that we’re hosting our second Nashville event the day before the Tennessee Relocation Council meeting. It’s a wonderful opportunity to introduce more people in the mobility industry to Move For Hunger’s mission, and hopefully inspire many new volunteers and supporters.

Get Involved

Lisa said it best: making a difference can be as simple as showing up. Whether you work in moving, relocation, logistics, or simply want to help fight hunger, there are many ways to get involved with Move For Hunger through volunteering, fundraising, and food rescue.

Stay tuned for our next Meet the CAN Spotlight, and thank you, Lisa, for reminding us all what showing up looks like.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
