University of Michigan Students Collect 2,300 Meals During Annual "Trick or Can" Food Drive

November 9, 2016

The Circle K International group at the University of Michigan hosted their fourth annual "Trick or Can" food drive this Halloween. The student-led organization handed out fliers, which urged residents in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti to donate non-perishable food items to help their neighbors in need. The students returned on October 31 to collect the donations.

We're happy to report that the group set a new "Trick or Can" record this year by collecting more than 2,700 pounds of food - that's the equivalent of 2,300 meals!

University Moving and Storage of Farmington Hills donated boxes for the collection and volunteered to deliver the donations to the Food Gatherers food bank.logo-university-moving-and-storage-1321

There are over 50,000 people, including 1 in 7 children, in Washtenaw County who face hunger each day. Thank you to the students, University Moving and Storage, and everyone who made a donation for helping put meals on the plates of those in need.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
