The Retreat Takes Action During Hunger Action Month, Making Them October’s Community of the Month!

November 2, 2021

The Retreat, located in Sumner, Washington, a city known for its small-town charm just outside of Tacoma, hit the ground running during Hunger Action Month, making them Community of the Month for October!

This September, the Goodman Real Estate property hosted a Hunger Action Month food drive, collecting over 900 pounds of food donated to the Puyallup Food Bank, equalling a total of 820 meals delivered to those in need.

The Retreat joined Move For Hunger in April of 2020, and has donated over 1,000 meals to those in need. Thanks to Apex Moving and Storage for transporting the donations! Over the past several months, Apex has been an invaluable moving partner. In addition to helping The Retreat, they also transported over 30,000 pounds of food this fall, making them September’s Mover of the Month!

Every meal donated is a meal needed because in Washington state, over 800,000 people, including 1 in 7 children, face food insecurity. In Pierce County alone, over 90,000 people don’t know where their next meal will come from. We’re thankful to everyone who has joined us in the fight against hunger!

Hunger Action Month is a month-long campaign that occurs every September and combines nationwide efforts to raise hunger awareness and encourage others to join the fight. Click here to learn how you can help us fight food insecurity or sign up to host your own food drive here!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
