Pre-School Students in Silicon Valley Collect 300 Meals for their Neighbors In Need

January 26, 2017

Early Horizons Childcare Center, a pre-school in Sunnyvale, California, hosted a holiday food drive from November 21 - December 16 in an effort to help put food on the plates of people struggling with food insecurity.

Students, teachers, parents, and other members of the local community were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items, such as canned vegetables, pasta, rice, beans, tuna, and peanut butter. The food drive proved to be a huge success as a grand total of 360 pounds of food was collected - that equates to about 300 meals!

Silicon Valley Moving and Storage generously provided boxes for the event and delivered the donations to Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara & San Mateo Counties.

There are 5.4 million people facing hunger in California, including 1 in 4 children. Thank you to everyone at Early Horizons Childcare Center and the crew of Silicon Valley Moving and Storage for making a difference in your community this holiday season.

Anyone can host a food drive. We can help!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
