April 27, 2022

For the second year in a row, northAmerican Van Lines and Move For Hunger partnered together to host a two-week-long food drive from April 18 - May 2 with northAmerican® Van Line agents across theNAVL_FPFD_2022.jpeg United States.

This year’s Great northAmerican Food Drive had nearly 15 different agents participating across 15 states, including Moving Solutions of Mentor, OH, Lile Moving & Storage in Lakewood, Washington, Arnoff Moving and Storage in Poughkeepsie, NY, and A-1 Freeman in Houston, TX. In total, they collected over 17,000 lbs of donations, providing over 14,000 meals to food insecure communities across the United States.

northAmerican® Van Lines partnered with Move For Hunger in 2011, and has since brought on more than 75 participating agents into the Move For Hunger network. Over the past eleven years, northAmerican® Van Lines and its agents have helped transport over 650,000lbs, equalling more than 545,000 meals, to food banks and pantries in the United States and Canada.

The first Great northAmerican Food Drive was last April, and collected an incredible 25,700lbs of donations, providing 21,500 meals to food insecure communities.

Through the support of partners like northAmerican® Van Lines and its parent company SIRVA, who is also a partner, Move For Hunger can continue to fight for the families, individuals, and children who are most in need of food assistance.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
