New Year's Resolution Food Drive

December 12, 2016

New Year's is just around the corner, a time when many of us resolve to exercise and eat better in the wake of holiday over-indulgences. All of this dieting means that many of us are purging our pantries of carbs, fats, and many other perfectly nutritious foods

What if we could get these foods out of our cupboards and on to the shelves of local food pantries?

crunchfitnessgymfooddrive2016_38thstreetMove For Hunger can help you make this idea a reality. With nearly 50  million Americans facing empty cupboards, the time could never be better to organize a New Year's Resolution food drive this year at your local gym. Encourage gym members to donate unwanted food from their pantry-purge, rather than throw it away.* Perhaps the gym will even offer a free trial week membership to anyone who brings 5+ cans? Together, we can make a difference!

Resolve to fight hunger this year: organize a food drive today!

(* Or better yet, donate healthy foods such as whole grain pasta, low-sodium canned vegetables, or no sugar-added canned fruits, to help others kick off the new year right, too...)

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
