New Jersey Teen Leading the Next Generation of Hunger Fighters

March 29, 2017

What makes a food drive successful? Finding the perfect location to hold the event? Sure. Promotion and advertising? Absolutely. But more than anything else, it takes a leader who is passionate about the cause, can communicate the importance of making a donation, and can convince others to take action.

Which brings us to Chase Haffner, a teen from New Jersey. As a member of the National Junior Honor Society, Chase needed to do a project which demonstrated leadership and citizenship. He decided he wanted to hold a food drive to help provide meals for the nearly 120,000 people, including 1 in 7 children, in Monmouth and Ocean Counties who are facing hunger every day.

From February 28-March 7, Chase started asking his family, friends, and neighbors if they could donate non-perishable items to help fight hunger in New Jersey. With that simple question, he inspired his community and was able to collect more than 140 pounds of food -- enough to provide 115 meals.

Special thanks go out to our partners at Lowy's Moving Service, a Wheaton agent, who volunteered to pick up and deliver all of the donations to The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

With kids like Chase leading the next generation, we might just have a chance to end hunger once and for all.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
