New Jersey Marathon | Going The Extra Mile To Fight Hunger

May 2, 2016

For the fifth straight year, Move For Hunger hosted a food drive at the New Jersey Marathon and Health & Fitness Expo.

TableFoodDonationBinCans_SmallWebOn Friday and Saturday, members of our staff and several volunteers were on hand to collect donations during the Expo. We were overwhelmed by the number of individuals who came in carrying shopping bags bursting with canned goods, pasta, and peanut butter as they filed into Monmouth Park prior to the big race on Sunday. On top of that, our partners at The New Jersey Marathon graciously donated bottles of water, protein bars, and other food that went unused following the race.

Through the efforts of everyone involved, we were able to provide over 8,000 pounds of food for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties! A very special thank you goes out to Lowy's Moving Service, a Wheaton Van Lines agent, who volunteered their time, donated the boxes, and provided the trucks to deliver everything to the food bank.

Team Move For Hunger was also able to raise $700 through the efforts of Kerry Duffy, who ran the half-marathon and turned her miles into meals for the second year in a row. Click here to learn more about Kerry's story!

Nearly 10% of the population of Monmouth & Ocean County is affected by food insecurity, including over 47,000 children, so it has never been more important to come together to help those who are less fortunate. Move For Hunger is so grateful for the support of partners like The New Jersey Marathon and Lowy's Moving Service, the selfless dedication of our volunteers, the generosity of our local community, and the commitment of individuals like Kerry Duffy. They make it possible for Move For Hunger to continue helping our New Jersey neighbors in need.AbbeyStandingAtTentNJMarathon

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
