Mover Spotlight: Don Henson of Brandon Moving & Storage

April 10, 2017

Brandon Moving  & Storage, a Bekins agent, is making strides towards fighting hunger in their local community. Based in North Little Rock Arkansas, Brandon Moving & Storage has been a part of the Move For Hunger network since 2013 and has delivered 12,350 lbs of food -- enough to provide nearly 10,300 meals -- during that time.

Co-Owner Don Henson said his favorite part about being in the Move For Hunger network is the stories. Being able to hear what a person went through and how their contributions are helpful to someone in need makes him hopeful that it may cause someone to pay it forward down the line.

While most of their donations come from food drives, Henson is hopeful that the success of their most recent event will serve as a turning point that will create a snowball effect for Brandon's crew. Henson hopes that the strong reaction from the community will rekindle his staff's passion for the cause and encourage more clients to participate in donating non-perishable food during the move.

Their most recent event was their Fill-A-Truck at a local Walmart on March 25. Six members of the Brandon Moving & Storage team attended and collected monetary donations and non-perishable food for the Choctaw Food Bank.

"First we got to thinking let's get some jugs in case anyone wants to make a monetary donation as they go in," Henson said. "So we did that and from that point on, it just seemed like everyone that walked up donated either financially or brought bags back out."

Brandon Moving & Storage collected nearly 1,500 pounds of food for the Choctaw Food Bank that day, providing 1,200 meals to their neighbors in need.

This was Brandon Moving & Storage's first interaction with the Choctaw Food Bank. Henson told us he enjoyed working with them so much that he spent an hour and a half at the food bank after the event.

"I'm just amazed and I hope to learn more from them," said Henson. "To see so many people you know that recognize and respect that pantry is amazing."

Next on the agenda for Brandon Moving & Storage is the Arkansas Strongest Man and Woman event on April 22 at Rock City Crossfit. Brandon Moving & Storage will be providing collection and transportation assistance for the event. In addition, Brandon Moving & Storage has two more Fill-A-Truck food drives planned at the same Walmart for the summer and the fall.

"We're excited and think it’s a great deal for the community and for all involved and we just really hope and expect that it will be a different year for us and that we get to participate in making a change," said Don Henson about the upcoming events.

Thank you to Brandon Moving & Storage for your ongoing commitment to ending local hunger.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
