Monmouth University Students Bring Hope to the Hungry

October 3, 2016

The freshman class at Monmouth University once again took to the fields of Wilson Hall to raise awareness of homelessness and hunger during their annual "Houseless Not Hopeless" event. This two-day community service event included a food drive and a visit from Move For Hunger to educate students about hunger within the community. Participating students slept outside overnight in cardboard boxes to simulate a few hours of living as a homeless community.

Thank you to Lowy's Moving Service, a Wheaton agent, for continually serving the local community with great generosity. This donation equates to over 140 meals that will be served to families in our community who are struggling with food insecurity.

Nearly 120,000 people in Monmouth and Ocean Counties residents face hunger every day, including 1 in 6 children. Thank you to the Monmouth University community and everyone who played a part in making this food drive a success!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
