Hunger is Scary: How to Host A Halloween-Themed Food Drive

October 3, 2016

Halloween is the perfect time to get your community together to help your neighbors in need. What better way to give back than by hosting a food drive.

"Trick-Or-Can!":  A few days before Halloween, reach out to your neighbors to let them know you will be holding a food drive. Leave them a decorated paper grocery bag and tell them you will be back on Halloween night to collect their bags - encourage them to fill the bags with non-perishable food instead of candy! Remember the bags may get heavy, so make sure to bring a wagon to pull them along.

fallthanksgivingholidayforkknifesilverwarefoodCostume Contest: Whether it is held at school, work, or a community center, let people know in order to participate in the contest they must bring 5 cans of food. Offer prizes to those who have the funniest, scariest, and most original costumes.

Halloween-Themed Event: It can be a dance, haunted hay ride, trick-or-trunk, or haunted house. Whatever the event may, be let people know the only way to gain entry is to bring at least 5 non-perishable food items.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
