Gentle Giant of Chicago Does the Heavy Lifting

October 17, 2016

In one of his most famous works, the poet Carl Sandburg referred to Chicago as "The City of the Big Shoulders." It was tribute to the blue collar, hardworking men and women of the midwestern metropolis. As the crew of Gentle Giant Moving Company recently proved, the words ring as true today as they did a century ago.

sgk-run-2On September 18, Gentle Giant had one of its moving trucks parked at the finish line of the Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure, which took place at Yorktown Center Mall. Hundreds of runners and walkers turned out to raise awareness, support breast cancer research, and celebrate survivors. Despite the huge turnout, there was still a significant amount of sports drinks that went unused.

That's where the Gentle Giant team came in. The crew loaded the leftover beverages onto their truck and delivered over 1,600 pounds of beverages to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Gentle Giant's branches have now rescued nearly 44,000 pounds of food and beverages from races all across the country in 2016 alone!

Forty-percent of the food produced in the United States each year is lost or wasted. Nearly 50 million Americans face hunger each day. Thank you to everyone at Gentle Giant Moving of Company of Chicago for your using your big shoulders to reduce food waste and fight hunger in the Windy City!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
