First Class Delivery: A1 Moving Makes Huge Donation to Island Harvest Food Bank

October 17, 2016

For the second year in a row, A-1 First Class Moving & Storage, a Atlas agent, volunteered its time and resources to rescue unused food and beverages from the Rock 'n' Roll Half-Marathon in Brooklyn, NY

A-1 had a truck stationed near the finish line in Prospect Park. Although there were hundreds of runners taking part in this extremely popular race, there were still plenty of energy bars and sports drinks leftover. A-1's crew loaded everything onto the truck and headed over the Island Harvest food bank in Mineola.partner_logo_Atlas-Color-Logo_profile

Island Harvest services both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, where over 181,000 people are food insecure, including 1 in 8 children. Thanks to the generosity of the team at A-1 First Class Moving & Storage, over 7,500 pounds of food and beverages were provided to the food bank!

Forty-percent of the food produced in the United States each year is lost or wasted. Nearly 50 million Americans face hunger each day. Thank you to everyone at A-1 First Class Moving & Storage for being committed to reducing food waste and fight hunger in New York!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
