Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage Tackles Hunger in Texas on Turkey Day

December 9, 2016

grubrun2016_firefightingsfinest_pickup-6Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth hosted the 8th annual Thanksgiving Day Grub Run, an unconventional 5K where runners have the chance to race on the same track as their favorite NASCAR drivers. The race also gives participants an opportunity to fight hunger in their community, as everyone is encouraged to bring 5 cans of non-perishable food.

Our friends at Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage never miss a chance to help, so before sitting down to a holiday meal with their loved ones later that day, members of their crew volunteered their time to assist with the Grub Run's food drive.

Firefighting's Finest had a moving truck stationed at the track, and spent grubrun2016_firefightingsfinest_pickup-7Thanksgiving morning collecting donations for their neighbors in need. With a little help from the Dallas Derby Devils, one of the event's sponsors, Firefighting's Finest loaded over 7,300 pounds of food onto the truck - that's enough to provide more than 6,000 meals!

All of the donations were delivered to the Tarrant Area Food Bank, which serves approximately 50,000 people every week, courtesy of Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage.

Since joining Move For Hunger back in 2010, Firefighting's Finest has collected 213,000 pounds of food - 177,500 meals - for the Tarrant Area Food Bank. Their enduring commitment to fighting hunger in Texas, even on Thanksgiving Day, is an inspiration to us all.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
