Last year was quite possibly our most successful year to date. If the first couple of months are any indication, 2017 is going to be even better. Already, we've seen the birth of a new tradition, two massive food rescues, and a host of memorable food drives. Here's a look at a few of our favorite stories from the opening weeks of the new year.
Gentle Giant Wins First Annual AMSA Truck Pull
The American Moving & Storage Association held their first annual Truck Pull fundraiser on February 27 during their conference in Palm Springs, CA.
Teams of 10 competed to see who could pull a moving truck the fastest. Gentle Giant Moving Company took home the trophy with a time of 17.99 seconds.
Michigan Moving Company & Local School Collect 8,000+ LBS. of Food
Move For Hunger recently had the opportunity to share its mission at the Michigan Movers Association Conference. One of the moving companies at the conference was ProfessionalMovers.com, a Wheaton agent. After hearing about past food drives, they were inspired to join the fight against hunger. They decided to partner with St. Patrick Catholic School in White Lake to host a food drive from January 23 to February 1. In a little over one week, students and faculty were able to collect more than 8,200 pounds of non-perishable food, enough to provide 6,800 meals for their neighbors in need!
To the Rescue!
One of Move For Hunger’s goals for 2017 is to have our network take part in the large-scale rescue events that can divert tens of thousands of pounds of food from the landfill and onto the shelves at food banks. Crown Relocations of Miami helped us open the year on a high note, as they were able to rescue more than 13,000 pounds of food/beverages from the Miami Marathon on January 29.
On March 11, Gentle Giant’s Washington, D.C. branch sent a truck to Rock ‘n’ Roll D.C. Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, and 5K and were able to deliver nearly 21,000 pounds of food/beverages to the Capital Area Food Bank.
