Blue Oak Elementary Students Collect 900 LBS of Food!

Blue Oak Elementary School in Cameron Park, California held a canned food drive from October 8-November 11. Students from each of the 31 classrooms were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to help provide meals for their neighbors in need.

Thanks to the generosity of these youngsters, 900 pounds of food were donated to the Food Bank of El Dorado County. That's enough to provide 750 meals to local families struggling with food insecurity. California Moving Systems, an agent of Atlas Van Lines, provided boxes for the drive and volunteered to deliver all of the donations to the food bank. CaliforniaMovingSystems_logo

There are nearly 24,000 people, including 1 in 5 children, in El Dorado County who face hunger each day. Thank you to everyone at Blue Oak Elementary and California Moving Systems for working to make a difference in your community.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
