Ace World Wide Tips The Scales and Rescues Over 16 Tons of Food!

November 29, 2016

Las Vegas may be known for its bright lights, parties, and gambling, but today we want to shift the focus and highlight an amazing food rescue that took place in Sin City earlier this month.

Las Vegas Rock-n-Roll Marathon 2014, Las Vegas, NevadaOn November 12 and 13, the Rock 'N' Roll Marathon rolled into town, filling the Las Vegas Strip with runners ready for the marathon and half marathon. In true Vegas fashion, the Rock 'N' Roll Marathon extended the fun all weekend, providing live music, parties and a three-day Health & Fitness Expo, not to mention races of varying distances, to attendees.

An estimated 40,000 runners came ready and excited to join in the fun, with the marathon and half marathon as the primary focus of the weekend.

If you've never run a marathon or race before, food will be provided to runners at the end of the race to help them regain energy after all of their hard work. The Las Vegas Rock 'N' Roll Marathon was no different.

This is where Ace World Wide comes in.

After these races, there is usually a lot of leftover food that tends to get thrown away. In fighting to stop that food waste, Ace World Wide Elite Relocation Services - Western Region, an agent of Atlas Van Lines, graciously volunteered their time to rescue the Las Vegas Rock 'N' Roll Marathon's leftover food and take it to Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas. They rescued so much food, in fact, that the food bank was unable to record the weight! They then had to weigh the truck with and without the food in it at a different location in order to find their total, which amounted to 32,440lbs, or just over 16 tons, of food!

Ace World Wide is not new to these totals, however. At last year's Rock 'N' Roll Marathon in Las Vegas, Ace World Wide rescued 32,584lbs of food from the garbage pile and was able to donate that food to Three Square Food Bank. Three Square was then able to provide over 27,000 meals for the hungry in their community.

There are 288,640 people in Clark County, including 114,650 children, suffering from food insecurity, and Move For Hunger would like to send its sincerest thanks to Ace World Wide for doing its part to help lower that statistic and for acting in the fight against hunger.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
