Summer of Service

September 22, 2017

We know that food banks face their greatest need during the summertime. Donations tend to decline, and families with children who had been receiving free or reduced-cost breakfast/lunch at school often need help replacing those meals. Hunger doesn't take a vacation, but neither do we. Members of our network helped to collect and deliver more than 200,000 lbs. of food since July 1 -- enough to provide more than 166,000 meals. Here's a look at how they did it.

Carolina Moving & Storage Delivers Backpacks Filled with Food to Children in South Carolina
South Carolina is home to more than 225,000 food insecure children. The Lowcountry Food Bank of South Carolina contacted us in hopes of finding a mover to volunteer for a delivery, so we reached out to Carolina Moving & Storage and they jumped at the opportunity. Carolina Moving & Storage, a Wheaton provided the trucks and manpower needed to deliver over 8,000 pounds of food — nearly 7,000 meals – to 7 different elementary schools around Beaufort, SC.

Apex Moving & Storage Collects Nearly 7,000 LBS. of Food at Washington State Fair
Move For Hunger doesn’t just make donations to food banks and pantries across the United States and Canada; our partners are forming lasting partnerships with their local hunger relief organizations. Case in point: In 2015, Apex Moving & Storage, a Stevens agent, joined our network and began making deliveries to the Puyallup Food Bank. The partnership with the food bank has opened the door to additional opportunities. Every year, the Washington State Fair holds a First Day Food Drive. Anyone who brings a donation of non-perishable food during the first two hours on the first day of the Fair gets in for free. This year, Apex Moving & Storage volunteered to collect donations at two of the gates.

Gentle Giant Moving of Philadelphia Rescues Enough Fresh Produce to Enhance 1,700 Meals
On August 7, Philabundance, a food bank that provides assistance to the greater Philadelphia area, asked if Gentle Giant would be able to participate in another glean this summer. Just two weeks later, Gentle Giant sent a team of volunteers to A.T. Buzby Farm in Pilesgrove, NJ. Their mission: to rescue as many pounds of fresh corn as possible. The Gentle Giant crew was able to glean 1,700 pounds of delicious New Jersey corn. According to Philabundance, every 1 pound of produce donated enhances 1 meal. Gentle Giant, then, helped to enhance 1,700 meals!

AAA Moving & Storage/Allied Alaska Collects 5,000+ LBS. of Food

Four of Allied Alaska’s locations – Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kodiak, & Palmer – held their own food drives outside of their local supermarkets.  Together, they collected almost nearly 5,200 pounds of food — that's enough to provide more than 4,330 meals! Allied Alaska is well on their way to meeting their goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of food by the end of the year!

Despite the busy summer moving season, White Glove Moving, Storage, & Delivery exceeded every expectation by donating more than 3,200 pounds of food  nearly 2,700 meals – to the Treasure Coast Food BankThat’s double what they collected during last year’s food drive!

Brandon Moving and Storage Hosts 5th Food Drive of 2017

Brandon Moving and Storage, a Bekins agent, has hosted not one, not two, but FIVE food drives so far in 2017! The Fill-A-Truck food drive they held at a local Walmart was an huge success! The moving company was able to collect 750 pounds of food, which is equal to 625 meals! Brandon Moving and Storage also received more than $1,000 in cash donations, and they donated that money to the Choctaw Food Bank, which used the cash to purchase more than 6,000 pounds of food. Tippet-Richardson Moving & Storage of Calgary Fills a Truck with 380 Pounds of Food!

Tippet-Richardson Moving & Storage played their part in the fight against hunger this summer by holding a Fill-A-Truck food drive in Calgary, Alberta. The event was held outside of the local Save-On-Foods supermarket, where one of Tippet-Richardson’s moving trucks was parked. Shoppers and the surrounding community were challenged to donate enough non-perishable food to fill the truck! It proved to be a successful way for the community to give back, as the event brought in 380 pounds of food— enough for 315 meals! All of the donations were delivered by Tippet Richardson’s crew to the Calgary Food Bankwhere 4 in 10 of the clients are children.

Two Men and a Truck of Pittsburgh Collect 300+ LBS. of Food

On August 12, kids in Bethel Park, PA had a chance to climb aboard police cars, fire engines, and one of Two Men and a Truck of Pittsburgh’s moving trucks at South Park Shops’ first-ever “Touch a Truck” event. Families love Touch a Truck events because, let’s face it, big trucks are pretty cool. We love them because they are a great place for our movers to hold food drives. There was a huge turnout and they were able to collect 325 pounds of food! That’s enough food to provide 270 meals!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
