William B. Meyer Holds Mardi Gras Food Drive

March 3, 2020

Mardi Gras was last week, and our friends from William B. Meyer celebrated by holding a red beans & rice food drive!

The Stratford, CT moving company started asking for donations of red beans & rice, which are the staple ingredients of the classic New Orleans dish, at the beginning of February and the food drive lasted the entire month. And this wasn't just a clever way to tie a food drive into a holiday, our goal was to meet a very specific need! Red beans & rice are two of the most highly-requested items by food banks. Why? Because they are high in both fiber and protein!

Meyer's General Manager and a member of our Mover Action Committee, organized the food drive and she made sure that everyone on the William B. Meyer team contributed to the effort. International Move Managers Michael Pavelko & Brian Varis collected more than 50 cans of red beans during the final week of the drive, while Mary Bruner & Debra Rivera from domestic customer service decorated and shared a King Cake with the staff! The passion for giving back comes right from the top, as William B. Meyer's Owner, Tom Gillon, Jr., is a huge supporter of Move For Hunger.

A grand total of 150 lbs. of food was collected, which will provide 125 meals! All of the donations were delivered to a food pantry in Bridgeport.

There are nearly 407,000 people in Connecticut who are struggling with hunger, including 1 in 6 children. Thank you to Mary Kate, Tom, and everyone at William B. Meyer for your commitment to our cause!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
