Wallace Pierce Law Provides 375 Meals to Durham, NC Students

December 13, 2018

There are more than 40 million people in the United States who are struggling with food insecurity. It's a scary statistic to begin with, but what makes it even worse is that almost 13 million of those people are children. Knowing that so many are in need, especially those who are so young, Wallace Pierce Law in Durham, NC decided to team up with other local law firms to hold a food drive.

WallacePierceLawThanksgivingFoodDrive2018 (6).jpgFrom November 1-20, Wallace Pierce Law's goal was to fill as many boxes with food donations as possible. Employees, guests and clients were encouraged to bring in non-perishable items, such as canned fruits and veggies, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, and more. By the end of the drive, they had collected 450 pounds of food, which is enough to provide 375 meals! What an awesome job for a first food drive!

Covenant Moving Company kindly volunteered to pick up and deliver the boxes of food to a nearby food bank. When the Covenant team arrived however, the food bank was no longer there, and a charter school stood in it's place. It almost seemed like the food no longer had a destination, that was until they stepped into the building. Reaching All Minds Academy had a pantry for it's students, and it turns out that they were in desperate need of food. The timing was perfect, and the school could not be anymore grateful for the donations.

There are more than 1.5 million people in North Carolina who are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. The food donated will help feed the less fortunate students of RAM Academy. Thanks so much to Wallace Pierce Law for taking the time to make a difference in your community, and thank you to all the law firms who joined you:

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
