The National Apartment Association Turns Miles Into Meals!

May 2, 2019

Last month, members of the National Apartment Association participated in the 35th Annual Parkway Classic in Alexandria, VA.  The race featured beautiful views of the Potomac and traversed through the charming streets of the city.

Parkway Classic April 2019.jpgThe race included a 10-Miler, 5K, and Kids Dash. Three members of the NAA completed the 10-mile run, while the rest of the team ran, jogged, and strolled through the 5K.  Their youngest participant was only six months old!  All in all, the National Apartment Association raised $2,000 to support our mission to reduce food waste and fight hunger in the United States.

Amy Allen, the National Apartment Association's Senior Manager of Program Development, said, "We enjoyed the experience and especially hope that our donation to Move For Hunger will contribute in a small way to the important work your group does to support individuals who live with food insecurity.  We hope to do more things like this in the future."

The NAA's headquarters are located in Arlington, VA where more than 16,700 people struggle with food insecurity. Thank you to the National Apartment Association for recognizing the urgency of the problem and turning your miles into meals!

More than 900 multi-family apartment communities are now giving their residents the opportunity to donate their food when they move. Click here to learn more.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
