The Body Shop Helps Fight Hunger in New York City

March 14, 2019

The Body Shop held a Thanksgiving Food Drive at their corporate office in New York from November 12-19 of last year. Employees were encouraged to donate non-perishable, Thanksgiving-themed items, such as stuffing, instant potatoes, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, and pie filling, to help provide holiday meals for their neighbors in need.

A grand total of 90 lbs. of food was collected, which is the equivalent of 75 meals! Our friends from Moishe's Moving Systems volunteered to pick up and delivere the donations to the New York City Rescue Mission.

The Body Shop is adamant about making a difference in the world. In addition to fight hunger, they are also heavily involved in campaigns related to banning animal testing, re-wilding the world, and reducing their environmental footprint.

More than 1.2 million people, including 1 in 6 children, in New York City face hunger every day.  We are so grateful to have The Body Shop and Moishe's Moving Systems as allies in our fight against hunger and food waste!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
