Team Move For Hunger Blasts Through the Bay Area

August 1, 2018

Only a week after Team Move For Hunger left its' mark on The Windy City, the Team ventured on to tackle the San Francisco Marathon, 1/2 Marathon & 5K. A race with 5 different distances, the Team was represented in almost every category, including the Ultramarathon (the marathon course twice). In addition to turning miles into meals on the course, Move For Hunger also assisted with picking up and delivering the leftover food from the finish line, helping those in need in the Bay Area.

SanFranciscoMarathon2018_TheMARCatPaloAlto_FPIManagement (8).jpgArmed with some of our multi-family program members from The Marc, Palo Alto, the Team raised more than $8,000 for our hunger relief and food waste reduction programs. Lead by Senior Community Director Linda Nguyen (who raised more than $2,000 alone), The Marc team had a blast out there on the course. In addition to turning their miles into meals, the group from The Marc is also part of our multi family program, collecting food from residents who relocate from their apartment communities. The Team also had runners in the 1st and 2nd half marathon distances, along with one runner in the Ultramarathon category. Chris Lotspeich not only ran the marathon course twice, he raised an amazing $1,700 with his campaign.

Just like numerous other endurance events nationwide, Move For Hunger helped off the course as well. Gentle Giant Moving Company graciously picked up and delivered the leftover finish line food to the San Francisco Marin Food Bank for the second year in a row. More than 9,600 pounds of food and beverages were delivered for those in need in the Bay Area.

A big THANK YOU to all of our donors, members and supporters for helping making this event a success for the second year in a row! Want to know how you can turn your miles into meals at an event near you? Email Margoand she can help find a race for you!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
