Suddath of Atlanta Holds Fill-A-Truck Food Drive to Support Local Veterans

January 5, 2018

Suddath Relocation Systems of Atlanta hosted a Fill-A-Truck food drive on Veteran's Day to support their local military men, women, and families in need.

As word spread about the event, which was held at the Georgia National Guard Armory on Saturday, November 11 from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, it seemed like just about everyone in the area wanted to get involved! The Lawrenceville Police Department, County Sheriff, and VFW volunteered to collect donations, as did a local Walgreen's store. Much of the credit goes to Mary Fowler from Suddath of Atlanta, who poured her heart and soul into this food drive.

The results speak for themselves: nearly 1,500 lbs. of non-perishable food was collected, which is the equivalent of 1,200 meals. Suddath delivered all of the donations to the Veterans Empowerment Organization (VEO) of Atlanta. The VEO provides housing, meals, counseling, training, and provides medical and dental attention to displaced military veterans and their families.

Fowler has already committed to holding the event next year and is certain they'll be able to collect even more food.

"We learned a lot of tricks that will definitely help us increase our totals," she said. "I didn’t fill a truck this time, but watch out for next year!"

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
