Security Properties Residential Collects 3,700+ LBS. of Food!

March 8, 2019

Security Properties Residential held a portfolio-wide Food Drive at 78 of their properties in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Oklahoma, Oregon, Nevada, Tennessee, Utah, and Washington throughout December and January.

These 78 locations collected a grand total of 3,774 lbs. of food, which equates to 3,145 meals for their neighbors in need! All My Sons Moving & Storage, Eco Movers, a National Van Lines agent, Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage, an Allied Van Lines agent, Golden Services LLCAboda, Smooth MovesAlexander’s Mobility Services, an Atlas Van Lines agent, Pikes Peak Moving & Storage Co., a Wheaton Van Lines agent, Note 16, Duet, and our friends from different CORT branches all over the western United States delivered the donations to their local food banks.

Security Properties Residential is a part of our Multi-Family Program. People throw away a lot of things when they move, including perfectly good food! We’re now partnering with more than 700 multi-family locations all over the country to make sure this food does not go to waste.

When a resident gives notice that they will be moving out, the property managers provide them with a program letter and a food collection bag. They are encouraged to donate any non-perishable food items that they will not be taking.

Once a property has collected a few bags, they contact us, and we connect them with a local transportation partner who will pick up the donations and deliver them to a local food bank.

More than 41 million Americans struggle with food insecurity each day. A huge thank you to Security Properties Residential and everyone who made this food drive such a success!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
