Portland Relocation Council Crushes the 100 Can Challenge!

May 21, 2019

It's always such a rewarding experience to partner with new organizations who are passionate about our mission. The Portland Relocation Council recently organized a 100 Can Challenge Food Drive at one of their meetings, and they crushed it! Members of the Council donated nearly 200 lbs. of food, which is the equivalent of 160 meals!

This food drive was set up by Tanya Mariottini, who is the Director of Talent Mobility for Nike and the chair of our Corporate Action Network (CAN). Members of the CAN serve as trusted advisors to our Executive Director, help recruit additional leaders to join our cause, integrate Move For Hunger into the relocation policies of the world's leading companies, and organize different food drives and fundraisers throughout the year.

Our friends at the Alexander's Mobility Services of Portland, an Atlas Van Lines agent, delivered the donations to JOIN Homeless Center, which provides critical basic services to the homeless getting back into housing. They have a day center that feeds the homeless, so food donations are always welcomed!

The Portland Relocation Council was founded in 2005 to support and educate those who have a common interest in global mobility. They are committed to giving back to the community and improving the lives of those in need, which is why they were so excited to partner with Move For Hunger!

More than 510,000 Oregon residents struggle with food insecurity, including 1 in 6 children.  Thank you to the Portland Relocation Council, Tanya Mariottini, and Alexander's Mobility Services for completing the 100 Can Challenge! We loved working with you and hope to partner together again soon!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
