MSS Tips-Off Food Drive with a Knockout Tournament!

June 26, 2018

It's always great to see members of our network coming up with new ways to support our fight against hunger. From April 25-May 24, our Partners from Movers Specialty Service, Inc. (MSS) held a unique food drive at their office in Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania, that brought their team together to help the communities they serve. What made this food drive a bit different than your typical one was that MSS held a knockout basketball tournament fundraiser to kick-off the event. Office antics were at an all-time high as workers competed against one another to be crowned the ultimate knockout champion. The tournament was clearly a huge hit, as MSS was able to raise $365! All of the proceeds were used to purchase non-perishable food.

When all was said and done, MSS had collected 725 pounds of food, which will provide more than 600 meals for the local food pantry, Manna on Main Street. Donations like this go a long way to help their neighbors in need. More than 77,000 people in Montgomery County are facing hunger each day.

A big thank you goes out to MSS, not only for holding this food drive, but for all of their support over the years! Since 2015, MSS has collected more than 2,750 pounds of food -- that's the equivalent of 2,300 meals!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
