The Manor Group Collects 1,000 LBS. of Food During Hunger Action Month

December 13, 2017

As a member of our new Multi-Family Program, The Manor Group encourages residents at each of their 10 properties in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and New Jersey to donate their food when they move. By providing thousands of renters with an opportunity to share what they can spare, The Manor Group is creating a sustainable way to reduce food waste and fight hunger. The most powerful impact of the Multi-Family Program, however, may be in its potential to rally entire communities together to support an important cause. It was with that possibility in mind that The Manor Group decided to hold a food drive during Hunger Action Month.

From September 1-30, residents at all 10 locations were asked to donate non-perishable items, such as peanut butter, tuna fish, canned goods, rice, pasta, and cereal. A grand total of 1,000 lbs. of food was collected, which is enough to provide more than 830 meals! All of the donations were delivered to each property's local food bank or pantry. Our partners from Davcon Relocation Services picked up the donations from Manor House Apartments in Lancaster, PA, but employees from the other 9 properties volunteered to make the deliveries themselves.

Forty million Americans are facing hunger, and yet somehow we are wasting 40% of the food we produce each year. Thank you to The Manor Group for joining our network and to the staff and residents at each of the participating properties for embracing the program. We look forward to accomplishing even more together in 2018!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
