Jay's Transportation Collects Nearly 2,000 LBS. of Food

October 29, 2019

For the second year in a row, our partners from Atlas Van Lines Canada agents held a massive food drive leading up to Canadian Thanksgiving, which fell on October 14 this year. Atlas Canada’s corporate office, along with Mackie Moving SystemsKing’s Transfer Van LinesJay’s Transportation, and AMJ Campbell, all teamed up to help to provide meals for their neighbors in need.

More than 4,300 pounds of food was collected overall, which will help to provide 3,600 meals to families across Canada. But, of the 10 participating branches, one stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Jay's Transportation's corporate office in Regina, Saskatchewan collected 1,980 lbs. of non-perishable food, will provide 1,650 meals to their neighbors in need.

"At Jay’s, we believe in the importance of giving back to the communities that we live in and work in; it’s an inherent part of who we are," said Cherri Herperger, Sales & Marketing Coordinator. "Our strength is built on the support we have received from those communities, so investing back into them is paramount."

Although Jay's Transportation Group has been a member of the Move For Hunger network since 2017, this was far and away their biggest donation to date.

"Our company, as a whole, has rallied around the Move For Hunger movement, both on a daily basis, as our consultants promote the opportunity to clients and on a larger scale when we organize food drives throughout the year," Herperger said. "When the donations are totaled after a food drive, the friendly competition between branches and other agents provides a camaraderie and company pride that is undeniable!

Household food insecurity in Saskatchewan is 10.6% which is slightly below the national average, but still far too high. Jay's Transportation is committed to helping families in the communities they serve.

"Move for hunger is a win-win charity," Herperger says. "It lightens the load of our customers who are relocating and, at the same time, it reduces food waste and helps fight hunger."

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
