Atlas Canada Agents Collect 2,200+ LBS. of Food For Thanksgiving

November 1, 2018

The arrival of Fall is a very exciting time of year. The leaves change color, apple and pumpkin flavors return, and the summer heat finally subsides. At Move For Hunger, we especially look forward to Fall because of all the incredible Thanksgiving food drives that take place. Seeing the kindness in our network of movers, apartment communities and more are increasingly inspiring every year, and Atlas Canada is a perfect example of that.

From September 4-October 12, Atlas Canada agents Jay's Transportation, Mackie Moving Systems and AMJ Campbell, all joined forces to provide holiday meals for families in need. Each company held food drives at multiple locations, collecting items such as peanut butter, tuna, pasta, cereal and more. Atlas Canada knew it was the perfect way to kick off the season, and they even incorporated a fun competition for a pizza party!

By the end of the food drive, a total of 2,250 pounds of food was collected between all three agents! That's enough to provide 1,875 meals to families across Canada. The food was then delivered to various food banks, including the Partners in Mission Food Bank, Feed the Need in Durham, Regina Food Bank, and more.

With food insecurity affecting 1 in 8 Canadian households, the hard work of Jay's Transportation, Mackie Moving Systems and AMJ Campbell is so incredibly important. The donations will positively change the lives of many in their local communities! Thank you so much to all of the locations that participated:

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
