Interwest Moving & Storage Hosts Trick or Can Food Drive

November 1, 2019

During spooky season we partake in annual fall traditions: pumpkin picking, binging scary movies, dressing up in our favorite costumes, and organizing Trick-or-Can food drives! Oh, you’re not familiar with that last one? It’s one of Move For Hunger’s new seasonal food drive campaigns. We asked members of our network to help us scare away hunger during October by incorporating a food drive into their Halloween festivities.

InterwestFallsTrickorCanFoodDRive2019 (13).jpgOur friends at InterWest Moving & Storage of Idaho Hills was one of many companies that responded! They held the food drive at Broulim’s grocery store, and asked shoppers to purchase non-perishable food, such as canned goods, pasta, and peanut butter, that they could donate on the way out. A grand total of 4,600 lbs. of food was collected, which will provide more than 3,800 meals for their neighbors in need! InterWest Moving delivered all of the donations to the Idaho Falls Community Food Bank.

InterWest Moving & Storage has now organized 3 food drives over the past year. Last October, they organized a Fill-A-Truck food drive at Broulim’s and collected 2,340 lbs. of food. And earlier this year, they held a food drive competition with their branch in Bozeman, MT to see which team could collect the most food!

More than 210,000 people in Idaho are facing hunger every day, including 1 in 7 children. Thank you to everyone at InterWest Moving & Storage for your commitment to our cause!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
