InterWest Moving & Storage Hosts Their Very First Fill-A-Truck Food Drive

October 18, 2018

There are currently 41 million people in the United States who are struggling with food insecurity. At Move For Hunger, we are committed to shrinking this number for good, and it's our dedicated and kind network of movers that can make it all possible. InterWest Moving & Storage, an Atlas Van Lines agent, is a perfect example of that dedication and kindness, in fact, they held their first ever Fill-A-Truck food drive earlier this month!

So how do Fill-A-Truck food drives work?

Well, it's all in the name! A moving truck is set up in the parking lot of a local grocery store and the community is challenged to donate enough non-perishable items to completely fill it. On October 13, InterWest Moving & Storage teamed up with Broulim's to bring that challenge to Ammon, ID. They also added a unique twist to the food drive by selling pre-made bags of "most needed items" to make the process even easier for those who may be unsure of what to donate.

We are happy to report that the event was an incredible success. By 6:00 PM that day, 2,340 pounds of food were collected! That's enough to provide 1,950 meals for families and individuals in need. With the truck packed and ready to go, InterWest Moving & Storage then delivered the donations to Idaho Falls Community Food Bank.

There are nearly 222,000 people in Idaho who are food insecure, including 1 in 7 children. The donations collected at Broulim's will help make a positive difference in the lives of those in need. Many thanks to InterWest Moving & Storage for volunteering their time and helping out their community. We hope to see them fill another truck soon!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
