Gentle Giant Moving Rescues 11,000 lbs. of food from The Boston Marathon

April 20, 2018

The Boston Marathon is one of the most iconic races in the world, as more 30,000 runners hit the streets of the historic city each year. After running 26.2 grueling miles, the competitors need to refuel. While the runners eat a majority of the bananas, energy bars, and other snacks that are provided by the race, tons of food is still left behind at the finish line.

Our friends from the Gentle Giant Moving Company jumped at the opportunity to rescue any leftover food/drinks from this year's marathon and help get it to their neighbors in need. The crew recovered more than 11,560 lbs. of food from the race and delivered it to two food banks in the area - the Greater Boston Food Bank and Pine Street Inn.

Gentle Giant never fails to show their dedication to the fight against hunger, they have taken advantage of numerous opportunities to collect leftover food from races all over the nation. Their branches have rescued nearly 150,000 lbs. from 13 different races over the last four years!

More than 700,000 people in Massachusetts are food insecure, including 1 in 7 children. Thank you to everyone at Gentle Giant for supporting our mission to reduce food waste and fight hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
