Gentle Giant Moving Company of Washington, D.C. Rescues 10 Tons of Food/Beverages

March 16, 2017

Last year, Gentle Giant Moving Company's branches rescued more than 46,000 pounds of leftover food and beverages from endurance events all across the country.

One of our goals for 2017 is to have our network take part in more of these large-scale rescue events that can divert tens of thousands of pounds of food from the landfill and onto the shelves at food banks. Gentle Giant is once again answering in the bell.

GentleGiantMovingCompany_Logo-500x241.pngOn March 11, Gentle Giant's Washington, D.C. branch sent a truck to Rock 'n' Roll D.C. Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, and 5K. Large road races, like this one, always provide food and beverages to the runners to help them refuel after they cross the finish. Gentle Giant's task was to pick up anything the athletes didn't take and deliver it to the local food bank.

And there was A LOT left behind. Gentle Giant's crew delivered nearly 21,000 pounds of food/beverages to the Capital Area Food Bank. This massive donation will provide much-needed assistance to the more than 425,000 people, including 1 in 7 children, facing hunger in the greater Washington, D.C. area.

Food rescues are becoming somewhat of a calling card for Gentle Giant. The crew in Seattle picked up 17,500 pounds of sports drinks, water, and fruit from the Rock ‘N’ Roll Seattle Marathon last June. In July, Gentle Giant of Brooklyn recovered nearly 3,000 pounds at the New York City Triathlon. On September 18, the teams in Philadelphia and Chicago combined to collect over 13,000 pounds of food and beverages at races in their respective cities. And on November 12, Gentle Giant Moving of Charlotte picked up 2,100 pounds of bottled water from the  Charlotte Marathon.

In the past 12 months, Gentle Giant Moving Company has rescued a grand total of more than 77,000 pounds of food/drinks from events like this one.

The Gentle Giant team is doing an amazing job, but with 50 million Americans facing hunger each day, we need more help! Contact Raquel today to inquire about race picks ups in your area or to discuss other food rescue opportunities in your community.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
