Five Members of the California Moving & Storage Association Hold Fall Food Drives

February 7, 2018

The California Moving & Storage Association encouraged all of its members to hold a food drive this fall, and five companies responded. Andy's Transfer & Storage, ASAP Movers, Chipman Relocation of Sacramento, McCarthy Transfer & Storage, a Wheaton World Wide agent, and North Bay Moving & Storage combined to collect nearly 3,200 lbs. of food, which is the equivalent of 2,650 meals! Here's a look back at how they did it.

Andy’s Transfer & Storage Fills A Truck With 700 LBS. of Food

The team at Andy’s Transfer & Storage had a mission: to fill one of their moving trucks with non-perishable food. From October 23-November 3, employees were asked to bring donations of peanut butter, tuna fish, canned goods, pasta, cereal, etc. The food drive concluded on November 4, when members of the local community were invited to stop by Andy Transfer & Storage’s warehouse and make a donation. Together, they collected 700 pounds of food — that’s enough to provide 580 meals! Andy’s Transfer & Storage personally delivered all of the donations to the Salvation Army of Glendale People’s Choice Market. The San Luis Obispo-based company held a “Fill-A-Truck” food drive at their local Trader Joe’s grocery store during the weekend before Thanksgiving. Then they did the whole thing again less than one month later! As a result, more than 1,600 lbs. of food was delivered to the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County -- which is enough to provide 1,350 meals. Read more...

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
