February 2020 Mover of the Month: Paxton Van Lines

March 4, 2020

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Paxton Van Lines has been named our Mover of the Month for February 2020!

Paxton Van Lines has supported Move For Hunger for nearly a decade, but the Springfield, VA company recently made one of its biggest donations to date.

Move For Hunger was planning an ArCANtecture Competition – in which teams build structures out of non-perishable food – with their partners from Kastle Systems. Harris-Teeter generously volunteered to donate 8 pallets of green beans, diced tomatoes, pinto beans, and cereal, for the event, provided that Move For Hunger could arrange for someone to come and get it.

KastleArCANtecture2020_PAXTON.jpgPaxton Van Lines did that, and more! On February 11, Paxton picked up the donations from Harris-Teeter and dropped it off at the Watergate Hotel so that the Move For Hunger staff had plenty of time to prepare for the event. The crew then came back on February 13 to pack it all up and deliver it to a pair of food banks in the region. More than 12,100 lbs. of the food was brought to the Capital Area Food Bank in D.C., while another 2,800 lbs. was delivered to the St. Lucy Food Project Warehouse in Manassas, VA. Their overall donation of 14,902 lbs. of food will provide 12,400 meals to their neighbors in need.

Since 2011, Paxton Van Lines has delivered 120,000 lbs. of food to food banks/pantries in the greater Washington, D.C. area. Although there are more than 1,000 moving companies in the Move For Hunger network, Paxton Van Lines is one of just 26 to reach that milestone.

The key to Paxton’s success? Finding other ways to get involved beyond asking their customers to donate their food when they move. Paxton Van Lines has organized food drives, they have rescued food from events like the Marine Corps Marathon, and they have used their resources to provide transportation assistance, as was the case with the ArCANtecture competition. It isn’t something Paxton is asked to do every day, or even every month, but when called on, Paxton Van Lines is always available to help.

In addition to the award, Paxton Van Lines will also be receiving Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Paxton Van Lines on this much-deserved recognition! Thank you for helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger in our nation's capital!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
