Eco-Movers is Fighting Hunger in Seattle

May 17, 2018

More than 254,000 people in King County, Washington are struggling with food insecurity. One in 7 children in the area is unsure of when they will have their next meal. The team at Eco-Movers is "constantly thinking about what their company can do for the community," and when they heard about those startling statistics, they decided to take action.

Since becoming a member of the Move For Hunger network in 2017, Eco-Movers has held two Fill-A-Truck food drives at grocery stores in their home city of Seattle. The National Van Lines agents parked a moving truck outside the entrance of a local Trader Joe's and Quality Food Centers and challenged shoppers to donate enough non-perishable food to fill the entire trailer.

Sounds like the perfect food drive for a moving company, right? It is! Eco-Movers collected more than 600 lbs. of food between the two events, which will provide 500 meals to their neighbors in need. Eco-Movers delivered all of the donations from both food drives to the Queen Anne Food Bank of Sacred Heart, which provides healthy food assistance to low-income families and people experiencing homelessness in Seattle.

Thank you to Amber, Grant, and the rest of the team at Eco-Movers for the important work you are doing in your community. We hope we can partner together on another food drive soon!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
