CORT Events Collects 300+ LBS. of Food at Springtime Soirée

June 7, 2019

Our amazing partners from CORT Events held a food drive during their Springtime Soiree in Washington, DC last month! CORT Events hosted the event on May 9 to show appreciation to their clients, industry partners, and colleagues. They also asked all 200 of their guests to bring non-perishable food donations to help us fight hunger in our nation's capital.

We always say that offering incentives are a great way to drive donations, and CORT Events agrees! For every 3 non-perishable food items they donated, attendees were awarded with a raffle ticket. CORT Events raffled off fabulous prizes donated by various venues & vendors, including home sound systems, spa days, dinner cruises on the Potomac, and a weekend getaway for two in Philadelphia! The result? More than 340 lbs. of food collected in one night! That’s enough to provide 285 meals! All of the donations were delivered to the Capital Area Food Bank.

CORT has been instrumental in the expansion of our Multi-Family program. With branches all across the country, CORT sends their own trucks out to pick up donations that are being collected at more than 1,000 apartment communities nationwide.

More than 76,000 people in Washington, D.C. face hunger every single day, including 1 in 5 children.

We are so thankful for our generous partners who donate their time, energy, and resources to help towards putting an end to hunger. Thank you so much to CORT Events for this amazing contribution to the community and for your commitment to our cause.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
