Cooking For a Cause | Connecticut Real Estate Agent Collects 150 LBS. of Food

October 13, 2017

On October 5, The Vanderblue Team | Higgins Group, a real estate firm in Connecticut, hosted "Cooking for A Cause," a unique spin on the traditional food drive.

Janine Vairo of The Vanderblue Team | Higgins Group was the point person for the event. Members of the community were granted the opportunity to enjoy a delicious dinner paired with wine, learned how to cook gourmet meals, and helped provide meals for their neighbors in need. Guests were encouraged to bring non-perishable foods to donate to the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County

The event was a huge success! The Vanderblue Team and Higgins Group invited Knot Norms Catering Co. to help out with the event and support Move For Hunger. Together they hosted an exquisite event for their guests and for this cause.

The event was held at Aitoro, a kitchen and appliance showroom that is equipped with eight fully operating kitchens. Aitoro supplied all the kitchen utensils that were demonstrated. Guests enjoyed linguine with fresh baby clams garnished with oregano, a buttery-rosemary steak, and grilled cheese hors-d'oeuvres.

The guests brought a wide range of non-perishable foods including cereal, flour, canned fruits and vegetables, oatmeal, peanut butter, crackers, jelly, beans, and soups. Nearly 150 pounds of food was collected -- that's enough to provide 125 meals!

This event tops our charts for creativity. What a great way to get community members together to fight against hunger! Thank you Janine and everyone else who made it possible!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
