CHPA Volunteers to Sort Donations at the Capital Area Food Bank

November 15, 2017

The Corporate Housing Providers Association (CHPA) always makes it a priority to coordinate volunteer opportunities in the cities where they host events. On November 8-9, CHPA held its East Regional Conference in Washington, D.C. and they kicked off the event by spending a couple of hours at the Capital Area Food Bank.

Representatives from Attache Corporate Housing, Corporate Housing By Owner, The Manor Group, Maryland Relocation, NEST Furnished Living Solutions, Northeast Suites, Princeton Properties Management, UrHomeinPhilly, and Zenya helped sort donations at the largest food bank in the Washington metro area.

CHPA2017-DC-NovemberConference (9).jpgThe Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) is partnered with more than 400 pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. They also deliver food directly to people in underserved areas. In 2016, the CAFB distributed 46 million pounds of food. That would not have been possible without volunteers to sort and pack the massive amount of donations they receive each day.

CHPA was only in town for a few days, and it would have been easy for conference attendees to spend their free time sightseeing in our nation's capital. Instead of taking selfies, they acted selflessly.

This volunteer opportunity was just the latest example of CHPA's commitment to fighting hunger in the United States. In May, their volunteers helped prepare more than 3,000 meals at the Central Texas Food Bank in Austin and in February they lent a hand at the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen in Costa Mesa, CA. They've literally helped fight hunger from coast to coast this year.

Thank you to all of the CHPA members who sacrificed their personal time to help sort through box after box of non-perishable food last week. And a very special thank you to Christine Saricos and Mary Ann Passi from CHPA for all the work you did to help make this volunteer shift possible.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
