Boerman Moving & Storage and Baird & Warner Real Estate Hold Fill-A-Truck Food Drive

November 28, 2017

There are a few food drives that we know we can look forward to every year. Earlier this month, Boerman Moving & Storage, a Bekins Van Lines agent, and their partners at Baird & Warner Real Estate of Naperville teamed up to hold their fifth annual Fill-A-Truck food drive at their local Jewel-Osco supermarket.BoermanMovingStorage&LogisticsFoodDrive2017(7).jpg

A Fill-A-Truck is the perfect type of food drive for a moving company. Boerman Moving & Storage parked one of its trucks outside of the grocery store on November 11 and their goal was to inspire shoppers to donate enough non-perishable items to fill the entire trailer. Employees from both Boerman Moving & Storage and Baird & Warner were on hand to help spread the word and load donations onto the truck.

More than 750 lbs. of Thanksgiving staples, such as cranberry sauce, pumpkin, and sweet corn, and other non-perishable items were collected -- enough to provide 625 meals. All of the donations were delivered to the West Suburban Community Pantry, which, in addition to providing food for people who are hungry, also "offers resources to empower people to improve their quality of life."

In the five-year history of this event, Boerman Moving & Storage has collected more than 5,200 lbs. of food -- enough to provide more than 4,300 meals.

“When we do the food drives, it is simply a positive experience for everyone," Jina Boerman, Boerman Moving and Storage’s Director of Marketing, told us last year. "We get to help the community and partner with our amazing real estate agents for a great cause – it’s a total win for us.”

Thank you to everyone from Boerman Moving & Storage, Baird & Warner, and Jewel-Osco who had a hand in helping to make this year's Fill-A-Truck possible. We hope we can continue working together to fight hunger in Illinois for years to come.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
