Two Men and a Truck of Pittsburgh Collect 300+ LBS. of Food

August 21, 2017

On August 12, kids in Bethel Park, PA had a chance to climb aboard police cars, fire engines, and one of Two Men and a Truck of Pittsburgh's moving trucks at South Park Shops' first-ever "Touch a Truck" event. Families love Touch a Truck events because, let's face it, big trucks are pretty cool. We love them because they are a great place for our movers to hold food drives.

"We were invited to the event by South Park Shops, and they were kind enough to let us host a food drive," said Paul Novelli of Two Men and a Truck of Pittsburgh. "They also helped us advertise and promote the food drive through social media."

Attendees were asked to bring donations of non-perishable food, such as rice, pasta, peanut butter, tuna, soup, canned fruits and vegetables, healthy snacks, and low-sugar whole grain cereals.

"The event went great," Novelli said. "There was a huge turnout and we collected 325 pounds of food!" That's enough food to provide 270 meals!

Two Men and a Truck delivered all of the donations to the South Hills Interfaith Ministries, which provides assistance to more than 4,000 people in the area.

Thank you to Paul and the rest of the team at Two Men and a Truck of Pittsburgh for seeing an opportunity to fight hunger in your community and making it happen!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
