Successful Annual Thousand Pound Challenge Food Drive

Real Estate Office Partners and Movers Team Up For Massive Food Drive

In May and June, Prominent Properties Sotheby’s International Realty (PPSIR) teamed up with Move For Hunger to hold the 1st Annual Thousand Pound Food Drive Challenge. Hunger is a big problem, and if you’re going to take it on, you have to think big. That’s why PPSIR went all in and enlisted each and every one of its 11 North Jersey offices in the inaugural company-wide food drive. The goal: donate 1,000 pounds of food. Each of the offices collected non-perishable food items from friends, colleagues, clients and family members to boost the food supply of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey and the Center For Food Action from May 15th-June 30th.

After six weeks of collecting non-perishables from employees and community members, PPSIR smashed its original goal by collecting

3,421 lbs of food

That’s what we love to see at Move For Hunger: PPSIR met its goal early, but instead of patting themselves on the back and calling it a day, the company redoubled its efforts and worked even harder to make the greatest possible impact in the lives of New Jersey’s 1 million hungry residents, 400,000 of whom are children. The collected food was delivered to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, which feeds over 900,000 hungry people in 18 New Jersey counties and distributes 40 million pounds of food to more than 1000 non-profit programs, and also to the Center For Food Action which provides emergency food, homelessness prevention, and utility assistance to tens of thousands of residents in Northern Jersey.

PPSIR’s above-and-beyond effort couldn’t have come at a better time. During the summer, food banks struggle to meet the increased demand that results when hungry children no longer have access to reduced-price lunches at school. Thanks to Prominent Properties Sotheby’s International Realty, nearly 3,000 hungry New Jersey children can enjoy a delicious, much-needed meal.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support of Harrington Moving & Storage, Ridgewood Moving Services - Agent for Bekins Van Lines, and All Season Movers, Inc. - Agent for Atlas Van Lines, who generously donated their time and resources to transport the food from all 11 offices to the food banks.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
