Storytelling Helps Drive Donations

December 21, 2016

As we know, hunger is an enormous problem in the United States. Each day, 40 million Americans are struggling to find their next meal. One in six children in the U.S. will go to bed hungry tonight. It's important to share these statistics, as they highlight the scope of the problem. When it comes to fundraising, however, it's also important for you to tell a story that will connect with potential donors.

The Why
What inspired you to hold a fundraiser for Move For Hunger? Was it a personal experience, or did something else draw you to the cause? Most of your donors will likely be family, friends, or co-workers -- let them know why you feel so strongly about our mission to reduce food waste and fight hunger.

Make it Relatable
Many people aren't aware that hunger affects every county in every states in the United States. They don't realize that there are people living in their community, maybe even someone they know, who rely on food banks to help make ends meet. Losing a job or a large medical expense can be difficult to recover from, and can force a family into the often inescapable cycle of poverty. Most of us, however, can imagine how those experiences would impact our own lives. Focus your messaging on explaining some of the root causes of hunger. The more relatable your message is, the more effective it will be.

Share the Impact
The donations you receive will help Move For Hunger continue to collect food and keep the shelves stocked at food banks all across the United States and Canada. In addition to asking people to donate their food when they move, our network is also helping ordinary people host food drives, rescuing leftover food from races, and donating their time/resources to glean fresh fruits and vegetables from farms. By sharing some of these stories with your potential donors, you can show them how their dollars will be put into action.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
