June 4, 2015

StevensPartnershipFeaturedImageWe are delighted to announce that Stevens Worldwide Van Lines is now an official partner of Move For Hunger!

Founded in 1905, Stevens Worldwide Van Lines started out with a single horse and dray to haul baggage to and from the Michigan Central Passenger Depot by Stevens' founder, Frederick H. Stevens, Jr. Today, Stevens specializes in local, out-of-state, corporate, and international moves, working with more than 900 agents around the world. To date, Stevens' agents have already collected over 125,000 pounds of food!

Stevens is based in Michigan, where over 1,600,000 people, including more than 1 in 5 children, face food insecurity. "After realizing how many families and children go to bed hungry, we knew that partnering with Move For Hunger was the right thing to do," explains Morrison Stevens, the Chairman and CEO of Stevens Worldwide Van Lines.

"We are so excited that Stevens Worldwide Van Lines has committed to fighting hunger in their local community and throughout the United States," says Adam Lowy, Founder and Executive Director of Move For Hunger. He adds, "With their involvement and broad network, we are able to expand our reach into more communities, helping reduce hunger not only in Michigan, but also the rest of the country."

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
